This can't end well

I bought this flat nearly 12 months ago. I managed to transfer the electricity (Scottish Power) into my name with no problem and having been paying bills ever since. Scottish Power still haven't managed to set up my gas account. They've got my address right on the electricity bill but not on the gas correspondence. I've tried to give them the correct address 5 times now since March and each time they tell me they can't access the account to make the change because the transfer is still pending.

I'm still getting gas piped in. It appears that the previous owners were getting their gas for free as no account apparently has ever existed for this address with any supplier.

All I want to do is pay for my gas bill (sobs). And not to have to go through Scottish Power's automatic phone answering system ever again.

Presumably you've been budgetting for this, and have kept enough in your bank to pay the bill when it finally comes. Do no more.

Keep putting the money aside each month. When you finally move on (not giving them a forwarding address, naturally) you'll have enough for a new handbag.

Dave is a very wise man - listen to him! And don't make anymore phone calls to them. How are they eyes?

wv: fookskip. You couldn't make it up.

I lived at my old flat for two years without ever receiving a gas bill, despite repeatedly trying to contact them to resolve the situation before it got horribly expensive. I live in mortal dread of the fuckers tracking me down and making me pay up.

Dave is right.

The only way this will be settled is by calling in Anne Robinson. And no one wants that.

With the 'watch and wait' plan from Dave you could get the Jacelyn from Hobo International - in pink!

that's all bit too sensible. My fear is that the bill for eleventy squillion quid will arrive two days after I completely run out of money (round about christmas time).

I also fear that that bill will include gas used by the previous owner.

I hope you took a meter reading when you moved in???

Even if not, it's not too late to start keeping track of what you use, just in case they try to sting you for 25 years of use or something.

of course.

However I have absolutely no idea where it is.

It'll be in the folder marked 'gas and electric' in your filing cabinet. That's where mine is, anyway.

Open a regular savings account. Set up a standing order from your main account to pay in each month what you estimate your gas bill will be. Then there will be none of this nonsense about bills arriving 'two days after I completely run out of money'.

Ooh yes, careful - at my flat in London I only received gas bills very occasionally, until one suddenly turned up for a grand.

Ooh! Pat is still alive!

Sounds similar to a problem my brother experienced. He did get bills when living at their house in Scotland but when they moved , despite informing them in advace it took over 18 months before they were able to get a final bill sent to them. They gave up on the phone calls and wrote instead, this seemed to speed things up marginally.

I feel your pain, 40 hours on the phone to BT to try and get broadband reduced me to tears on more than one occasion!

Good luck!
